The Sun that surely gives time and rhythm to the Earth and all her inhabitants— life-giving, eternal and as sure as only itself.

The concept ‘Transformation’ has taken on huge significance in the world in general, and South Africa in particular, during the last few decades. It has become the ‘stock-in-trade’ of South African politicians and their parties, permeates all aspects of society in our country, and has the tendency to either unify or polarize groups and peoples depending on the circumstances or implications of said Transformation. Radical change is seldom easy and the associated challenges are considerable.
Clearly the term has many other applications and the power, effects and reality of its process are evident in ongoing technological changes that have revolutionized human and other life on our planet...not always in the best interests of our or Earth’s health. But possibly the most significant and awe-inspiring transformation plays out in nature, that sublime source of all life, natural resources and wonders not man-made. What a tragedy that many of nature’s aspects and life-supporting systems seem terminally threatened by Man’s staggering indiscretions.
Nature abounds with transformations of such import that their wonder is only surpassed by their beauty. Seeds developing into beautiful plants, fruit and flowers, captivates and sustains mankind. The flora cycles allied to seasonal changes are awesome in their variety and allure. But arguably the most impressive transformation of all is that of a caterpillar to a butterfly. What can rival the process that produces the splendour of a magnificent butterfly through the seeming demise of a vegetation-bound worm?
The relevant literature is rich and evocative with fittingly beautiful butterfly images and sage observations on this incredible phenomenon. One such reflects on what seems to be the end of the world for the caterpillar, but is actually the beginning for the exquisite butterfly. (Richard Bach) Some argue that there is a profound lesson in the courage and faith that it takes to undergo the massive change for this transformation.
Man is an integral part of nature and should be expected to learn and benefit from its processes. Some would suggest that each one of us has a butterfly within, waiting to be released and to realize its considerable talents and beauty. We would be well-advised to allow and promote this profound transformation.
A good perspective on the powerful forces in operation is reflected in Rick Warren’s:
“God changes caterpillars into butterflies, sand into pearls, and coal into diamonds using time and pressure.
He’s working on you too.”
We are strongly encouraged to grow into maturity beyond our constricting ‘caterpillar’ stage to realise our full potential as we rise above struggles and situations to transform into the strongest versions of ourselves.
May we all take flight with our ‘butterfly wings’ in our quest to be the best that we can be.

Plato called it a moral law. Huxley called it the deepest mystery. Music is humanity's oldest argument for joy.

We all know the saying. We all keep doing it anyway. A meditation on the judgements we make before we know a single thing.
